How to make a guitar cable


Today we're going to do a quick run through of how to make a guitar cable. It’s a pretty simple procedure, but if you’ve never made one before, it can be a little bit daunting at first.

To make a cable, you will need to following items:
  1. Some cable
  2. Two ¼” jack plugs
And the following tools:
  1. A soldering iron and some solder
  2. Wire cutters/strippers/pliers
 Here’s the cable we're going to use:


 And we're going to use two of these jack plugs:
 


I really like this design of plug (and I’ve used a tonne of different ones over the years). To open it, you unscrew the end cap/cable relief:

 
Then lift up the cover:


 Which reveals the following:

 
Obviously you can use a different design if you like.

Today we're making a short cable that will go between effects pedals. There’s nothing different between this sort of cable and a standard guitar cable, apart from the length.

This one, we're going to cut to 20cm (8”):
 


Then trim the outer sleeve back by 15mm (a little under 5/8”):


We trim the inner wire insulation back by a few mm and then twist the end of the wire together. The outer shielding wiring is also gathered and twisted together:


All of this is done at both ends, leaving us with this:



We then slide any necessary items over the cable before doing any soldering. You’ll get away with forgetting this for the first plug, since you can always slide it on from the other end after soldering. However, for the second plug, it’ll be too late and you’ll have to unsolder something to fix it. 


Next step is to melt a couple of healthy blobs of solder onto the two positions where we intend to attach wires.


Then we “tin” the wires, which is to say, we melt a little bit of solder onto them:


We're also going to cut the outer ground wire a little shorter, so that it fits its position on the plug better:

 
Now we solder the wires on. When doing this, try not to keep the soldering iron on the plug for an extended amount of time, as some of them can be ruined very easily.

Firstly, the ground wire:

Before closing up, we need to secure the cable by tightening the metal clamp as follows:



Then we place the cover back in place:


And tighten the end plug/cable relief:


We do the same for the other end of the cable:


And here’s the end result:

Guitar Amplifier PSU


Tubes (thermionic valves) have never departed from the amplified instrument scene and the majority of guitarists, including very young ones, wouldn’t use anything else. Some diehards think that the H.T. (high tension) rectifier should also be a piece of glass-ware and some manufacturers are still producing amplifiers incorporating one. The nett effect is really that a rectifier tube acts as a relatively effective heat-dissipating resistor, causing the HT rail to sag as output signal loading increases, generating a compressive characteristic which is fundamentally added distortion(‘crunch’). The traditional arrangement uses a centre-tapped HT winding on the power transformer but this has a number of drawbacks for an adequately rated core size including increased voltage stress, small wire size and a poor utilisation of the available winding window.

The example arrangement shown here reduces both of these problems and for a given core increases the current delivery capability of the winding by allowing the use of a heavier wire gauge. Normally some resistance is added in series to each anode to limit peak cathode current to minimise cathode-stripping during the high current pulses delivered to the input filter capacitor at each voltage peak.


Even if one includes such resistance (and a single resistor in series with the cathode or winding achieves the same end albeit with double the device dissipation) the benefits to the transformer of reduced voltage stress and increased wire insulation thickness (which scales with wire diameter) along with decreased heating in the windings, are obvious.


Alternatively, a smaller winding window (reduced core size) may be employed with-out diminishing power-handling capacity. The circuit shown here should is typically intended for the amplifier preamp and phase splitter stages. Due to the use of the EZ81 (6CA4) tube its maximum output current is about 100 mA. Higher currents call for a more powerful rectifier tube and diodes to match.

Installing an under saddle pickup on an acoustic guitar



This beautiful guitar needs an under-saddle pickup. This is a kind of 4-step process, as follows:

1. Drill a 12mm (or 12.5mm) hole where the endpin used to be, to install the endpin jack.
2. Drill a hole through the bridge to allow the pickup wire to pass through.
3. Sand down the bottom of the old saddle, taking off the same amount as the height of the pickup that will now sit under it.
4. Solder the wire from the pickup to the endpin jack.


OK, let the adventure begin!

Firstly, before drilling a hole for the endpin jack, the old endpin needs to be removed. As this is tapered in shape, it should be easy to just yank it out. Get a good firm grip with your fingers and give it a tug. If you’re lucky, it’ll pull right out. In my case it did.


Now you’re left with a hole that is too small for the endpin jack. As you are not drilling a new hole, but rather expanding one that already exists, the traditional method is to use a reamer.

The problem with this method, however, is that a reamer leaves you with a tapered hole (unless you get a specialised one just for this job), so by the time you open the hole out to 12 mm at one end, it is still too small at the other end. To rectify this, you need to use a round file to file out the rest. I’ve done this before and it took a lot of time.

So instead, I decided to try a different approach this time. It just so happens I have a stepping drill bit whose largest diameter is exactly 12 mm. As it is a stepping drill bit, it behaves in a similar way to a reamer, in that it enlarges holes as it goes through, rather than making one huge 12mm hole in one go. This makes it a nice safe way to drill the endpin jack hole without having to worry about splitting or chipping wood. I wasn’t quite sure how this method was going to work out for me, but it worked perfectly. Note that this will only work if the largest diameter of your stepping drill bit is 12mm.


Most under-saddle pickups require you to drill a hole straight down through the bridge (under the saddle), but this particular pickup required the hole to be drilled at 45°. This was quite risky, as it was very difficult to avoid the bracing inside the guitar. If you are ever doing this, have a good feel inside the guitar to try to locate the closest bracing, in the hope that you can somehow avoid it (whatever you do, don’t have your hand in there while you are drilling the hole). Luckily in this case it was possible to avoid the brace by about the width of a human hair (no kidding).


The hole needs to be smoothed out with a small round needle file, so that there are no rough edges. For this particular type of pickup, it is also necessary to round off the 45° angle, so that the pickup/lead doesn't get a kink in it.


The pickup lead now needs to be fed through the hole and the pickup then placed in the saddle slot.


Now you need to sand the same amount off the bottom of the saddle as the height of the pickup. Use a Vernier caliper to measure the thickness of the pickup, then mark this on the bottom of the saddle. Simply rub the saddle against sandpaper taped to a very flat surface (it’s extremely important to get a flat surface on the bottom of the saddle, so do it right) until you have sanded off the correct amount.

The last thing you need to do before stringing up the guitar is to solder the pickup lead to the endpin jack. Make sure that before you do this, you slide any endpin jack covers, nuts, washers, etc., up the lead, as you won’t be able to do this once it’s soldered. You can slide these parts up the cable from inside the guitar, then pass the lead through the endpin jack hole to do the soldering outside the guitar. It’s a good idea to protect the finish on your guitar with rags or something while doing the soldering.

Once soldered, push the endpin jack into the hole. Feed the washer and nut down the lead and onto the endpin jack (inside the guitar – yes, it’s fiddly). Tighten the endpin jack nut, making sure that it is nice and tight, as it will have a tendency to work loose otherwise. If there is some sort of endpin jack cover, fit this now.

Now place the saddle in the saddle slot and string up the guitar.


Here's the finished product. She's a beauty, isn't she? Sounds great too.
