Arcing occurs when current breaks through insulation to earth or another phase. For example let , 40MW can be generated. During arc temperatures may reach 20,000°C. There is an explosive pressure wave. Fire breaks out. Dangerous and toxic chemicals can be produced. People are injured or killed. The damage is serious.
Arc fault protection is your insurance against such devastation. The key to total protection is to detect and extinguish the arc immediately. Arc fault protection system will detect an arc anywhere within the switchgear enclosure . A tough, unshielded fibre optic cable is run around the switchgear enclosure’s interior and senses the intense light from a developing arc, no matter where it strikes.
